Wereldwijde voorraad zilver blijft toenemen

De totale zilvervoorraden in de wereld blijven toenemen, zo blijkt uit cijfers die de CPM Group en het Silver Institute afgelopen woensdag publiceerden. In hun nieuwste rapport over de zilvermarkt (pdf) troffen we een tabel aan van de totale bekende zilvervoorraden sinds 1970. Maken we deze gegevens inzichtelijk in een grafiek, dan zien we dat er helemaal geen sprake is van tekorten op de zilvermarkt. De totaal bekende zilvervoorraden in de wereld stegen in 2013 naar 863,8 miljoen troy ounce, wat ongeveer gelijk staat aan de wereldwijde productie van zilvermijnen in één jaar.

Overheden verkopen voorraden

De grafiek laat zien dat de bekende bovengrondse zilverreserves tussen 1970 en 1990 tussen de 400 en 600 miljoen troy ounce schommelden. Dat terwijl overheden een groot deel van hun strategische zilvervoorraden liquideerden. Een groot gedeelte van dat zilver werd gekocht door beleggers, die het in bewaring gaven bij de New York Commodity Exchange. Vanaf 1991 begon de totale voorraad zilver te dalen, omdat er veel nieuwe industriële toepassingen ontdekt werden waar zilver voor gebruikt werd. De zilvermijnen konden niet aan de toenemende vraag naar zilver voldoen, waardoor de wereld tussen 1991 en 2005 inteerde op haar bovengrondse zilverreserves. Op de volgende grafiek is die ontwikkeling goed te zien.

Beleggers kopen weer zilver

Vanaf 2005 begonnen de zilvervoorraden weer te stijgen, want beleggers begonnen weer volop zilver te kopen. Door de komst van ETF’s werd het voor beleggers veel makkelijker om een positie te nemen in fysiek zilver. De groeiende populariteit van beleggen in zilver zien we terug aan het groen in bovenstaande grafiek. Deze grafiek laat overigens niet de volle omvang van de vraag naar het edelmetaal zien, omdat alleen de geregistreerde voorraden genoemd worden. Alles wat beleggers kopen in de vorm van zilverbaren en zilveren munten en in een kluis bewaren is niet in dit overzicht opgenomen.

Hoe groot de totale zilvervoorraden vandaag de dag precies zijn, dan laat zich moeilijk raden. Overal in de wereld hebben mensen door de jaren heen zilver verzameld, niet alleen in de vorm van munten en staven, maar ook in de vorm van juwelen, bestek en andere ornamenten. Volgens de CPM Group was er er eind 2013 wereldwijd naar schatting meer dan 24 miljard troy ounce aan zilveren juwelen, decoraties en ornamenten. Dat is ongeveer de helft van de geschatte 51,9 miljard troy ounce aan zilver die in de hele menselijke geschiedenis is opgegraven.

Als je bedenkt dat beleggers sinds het uitbreken van de financiële crisis ieder jaar voor 100 miljoen troy ounce aan zilveren munten gekocht hebben (zie onderstaande grafiek), dan kun je wel nagaan dat de totale zilvervoorraden die als belegging worden aangehouden veel groter zijn dan de ruim 800 miljoen troy ounce aan geregistreerde voorraden.
