Toeristen in Dubai kopen veel goud

Niet alleen Chinezen en Indiërs, maar ook toeristen uit andere Aziatische landen, kopen vaak goud tijdens een uitstapje naar Dubai. Vooral het 22 karaat goud is populair, zo schrijft Gulfnews. Afgelopen vrijdag betaalde men in Dubai 163 dirham per gram, ongeveer $44,38. Omgerekend naar 24 karaat zuiver goud is dat een premie van enkele procenten bovenop de spotprijs.

“Er is veel vraag naar fysiek goud bij prijzen van 160 tot 168 dirham per gram, maar toen de goudprijs halverwege april op 152-158 dirham lag overspoelde de vraag het aanbod”, aldus Cyriac Varghese van Sky Jewellery. “Voor toeristen die weer terugvliegen naar huis is er sowieso een prijsvoordeel te behalen als ze goud of sieraden kopen in Dubai”, zo voegt Varghese eraan toe.

Het prijsverschil voor fysiek goud tussen de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten en India is 7%, een verschil dat verklaard kan worden door de importheffing van 6% op gezuiverde en onzuivere goudbaren. Indiërs die het land weer binnenkomen mogen sinds kort weer wat meer goud meenemen, zonder dat daar belasting over betaald moet worden.

Historisch gezien maken de kleine gouden munten en goudbaartjes 5 tot 8 procent van het totale volume uit dat verhandeld wordt. Na de prijsdaling van een paar weken geleden was deze markt veel groter, naar schatting bijna 30% van het totaal verhandelde goud. Deze ontwikkeling laat zien dat veel kleine kopers actief waren op de markt.

“De meerderheid van de kopers maken zich niet zo druk over centrale banken die goud verkopen, een dollar die sterker wordt of een reeks van zwakke macro-economische cijfers”, zo verklaarde een goudanalist uit Dubai. “Hun belangstelling voor goud is elementair, het is er altijd. Dat zie je al bij Indiase kopers, maar ook steeds meer bij Chinese klanten. Iedere prijsdaling zal een nieuwe golf van fysieke aankopen uitlokken”.
